Email marketing is an effective strategy for businesses of all sizes to communicate with current and prospective customers. Building a list is especially ideal for small businesses, because it’s inexpensive and relatively simple. There are a few ways to build an email list–some methods are more ethical than others. Some businesses choose to buy email lists; many recipients may view this type of message as spam. Building a list from scratch is ultimately more effective because you’re contacting people who have expressly shown interest in your company.

Collect email addresses from customers. If you have a store or booth, you can place a sign-up sheet near your checkout for customers to write down their name and email address. If you have an online shop, you can include an option during the checkout process for customers to opt in to your mailing list. Let people know that signing up for your mailing list gives them access to updates, sales and exclusive deals.

Offer a free product or discount. This is especially effective online. For example, offer a download an ebook or white paper relevant to your business. Offer a free sample or discount coupon when they sign up for your list. Keep in mind that some consumers may sign up for your list in order to receive the product and then unsubscribe right away, so be sure you’re offering a product you can afford to give away! Digital products are an affordable option for cases like these. If you do decide to offer a free sample, consider making it a limited-time offer. Coupons and discounts can work in a similar way – encourage people to sign up by offering a discount via email when they opt in.

Make it easy for visitors to sign up for your list. Place a form or signup link in a prominent place on your website. Keep signup simple–a name and email address is really all you need.

Encourage your subscribers to forward your emails to people they know who would also benefit from signing up for your list.

Keep your subscribers’ information private. Reassure visitors that you won’t sell or share their email address or any other information when they sign up for your list. Many are hesitant to give out their email address because they don’t want to receive spam messages – and for good reason!

Make sure each email or newsletter you send tells who you are and how to contact your business. What you don’t want to do is get people all riled up about what you have to offer, yet leave them with no clue how to get it.
