The use of social media as a valid marketing strategy has become an invaluable tool in building your business and establishing your brand. Blogs and other social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube are now standard issue weapons in most any company’s social media strategy. Social media enables you to advertise your products and authentically interact with your audience. Such an opportunity can be a gold mine for the savvy marketer. But all advertising and engaging can snatch hours from your day and for the solopreneur or small business owner going it alone, that time investment required for effective social media management can infringe on your ability to meet other commitments.

The ability to properly manage your time is one of the core laws of success and productivity. Time management is essential and non-negotiable. A To Do list is tantamount to handwriting practice without an effective plan for getting things done and that INCLUDES time management. Time is one resource that once depleted is generally non-renewable. So you need to invest your time wisely. Setting and prioritizing your social media marketing objectives can get you going in the right direction. The next thing you need to do is have a smart plan for achieving said objectives.

So how do you deal with the issue of time management in social media?

1.Follow the guy in front of you

There’s not enough day in the day to reinvent the wheel with every project you touch. Set your social media strategy by capitalizing on the paradigms that currently exist and mimic their success. Navigate tough terrain by following the advice of someone who’s already done what you are planning to do. Get fanatical about following the leaders in your niche. Find sites that demonstrate ways to get the most out of your social media projects and follow their instructions. It’s smart to leverage the wisdom of others. Copy their success formulas.

2.Call in the Automated Cavalry

We’re all doing a hundred different things and it can be difficult to find the time you need to do the things which must be done with regard to your social media presence. It is impossible to be online 24 hours a day. As such, you’re going to miss things – links, messages, updates, funny quips by the redhead you don’t remember meeting but who remembers meeting you. Automate as much of your social media campaign as you can by writing blog posts in batches and keeping them short and sweet. Seth Godin is a master at this. Take your big bunch of blog posts and schedule them to automatically be posted on specific days. Automate the announcement that a new post is out. WordPress allows you to schedule posts and automatically tweet out the announcement of your post on the social media staples. Try these automation tools on for size.

Hootsuite- automate messages to and from WordPress, LinkedIn , Facebook, Foursquare, Twitter and other social media accounts

TweetDeck- bring more flexibility and insight to power users

Virtue- deliver brand messages directly on FB, Twitter, Google+ feeds

SocialSocialOomph- preferred productivity solution for Twitter users

Ping.fm.- makes updating social network in a snap!

And…

TubeMogul- for your video updates

RSS- track your favorite blogs, and

FriendFeed- collect as many online activities, blogs, photos, etc. in just one site.

All these online applications can help you save time, take it easy on your activities, plus boost your social presence all in just one click.

3. Repetition is a Good Thing

With people as with puppies, routine is the key to happiness when it comes to social media management. If you are the type who is inclined to work on several activities during the day, establishing a routine will help you to focus your energy on each task and know them off the list as you go. It’s easy to get distracted by the activities going on with social media. Schedule a time to engage and stick to your new routine.

One final tip. the sage advice that marketers should be seen across multiple social media channels is only good advice if you can manage the load. Only take on as much social media as you can handle. Add to your arsenal as your schedule (or budget to hire a contractor) allows. Manage your time wisely, stay focused, and utilize all the available online resources to help boost your business to success. It may not be easy but results can be very rewarding.

There is no shortage of information available. We encounter tons of it every single day. Some information is delivered in the form of fresh ideas; some is recycled content from thought leaders. Figuring out which ideas to explore for your blog or site is an important part of your content strategy. The process is both easy and complicated as the temptation to offer the insight on trending topics is one of the things many digital social butterflies support. However, treading the water of trending topics is not always the best content for your audience. Therein is the quandary of content strategy – knowing what to say.

There are no right answers here. A blogger needs to have a keen eye and an open mind when it comes to content strategy and development. Engaging an audience with innovative thoughts and an interesting take on the issues currently on people’s radar is a great skill to have. Still, the best use of your time is to develop content that moves your audience.

There’s no such thing as a perfect idea. Some blogs are made to stir controversy. Some sites are designed for hipsters and intellectuals. Your content should be an extension of your brand, but it should also be centered around the thoughts, habits and experiences of your users. Your ultimate goal in developing your content strategy should be to add something to the lives of your readers. Anything less is essentially spam.

Here are some things to keep in mind as you develop your content.

Consistency – Your site represents your brand. As such, there should be marked consistency between what you sell, promote or say you stand for and the content that ends up on your site. Everything on your site is content. Text should be consistent with images which should be consistent with SEO tags, categories and keywords.

Navigation – It doesn’t matter how great your text and images are if no one can find them. Make your site intuitive to navigate. Few things are more frustration than not being able to find what you want or need on a website. You’ve got a 5 second window to get people where they want and need to go on your site

Write with purpose – Plan what you will write then write it. is the best way to keep your market interested to your blog. It is important to have an organized string of thoughts and a schedule of topics to keep your blog fresh and exciting to your readers. Your content strategy should include a content calendar identifying themes, topics and ideas you plan to deliver.

Remember that the content of your blog is designed to connect your thoughts to your audience. Keeping your thoughts relevant and appealing will help your blog grow and be effective to your chosen market.

Boost Your Site Rankings by Tightening Up the Header and Footer

We’re well into the new millennium and if there’s one thing we’ve learned in this age of social engagement it’s that every business owner benefits from some kind of online presence and it’s always good to find ways to increase online traffic to your website or social media profile. Your online presence – whether it’s your social media profile, your website or just a Merchant Circle account – is a digital representation of your products and services. These days, you should absolutely expect your customers to find you online. In fact, TechCruch recently reported that not only are people searching online for local merchants, that 80% of smartphone owners are shopping using their phones. People are finding what they need online so it’s important for you to be able to target those customers and help them find you to increase online traffic to your website.

One of the primary challenges faced by business owners is finding the best (i.e. quickest) ways to increase brand awareness using digital marketing. Often it’s hard just getting eyes on your website. But once you have the traffic to your site, how do you keep them on your site so that they are there long enough to be drawn in to perform a function, whether that function is buying something or subscribing to your blog or service?

Here are the basics on how to optimize your online business presence to improve customer experience and create an environment that’s conducive to sales.

Be easy to find

Consistency is important. If you have a brick and mortar business, your business contact information (i.e. name of the business, address, phone number, and the email contact) should be visible at all times on the website. You also want to register your business address with Google Places and make sure the address on your site matches the address on file with Google Places. Google uses computers and formulas to match your site with a specific geographical location and niche. Make sure it’s an easy match-up.

Build the visibility of your business and increase online traffic to your website by adding geo keywords to your site. Instead of positioning yourself as a fantastic commercial roofer, use terms like “Atlanta GA commercial roofer” and “Decatur, GA commercial roofing contractor” in your site content so that you show up more readily in search results. When prospective customers in your area search for product and services, they will find you.

2. Adjust title tags and page tags

Remember that prospective customers are searching online for products and services, not your shop so use tags to help them find you.

In addition to adding geo-specific keywords, make sure your Site Title identifies your products. If you’re using WordPress as your content management system, under Settings > General, you have the option to input a Site Title and Tagline. Increase your chances of being found by steering clear of ambiguous site titles that don’t really capture what it is you do. If you run a salon in Bismarck, North Dakota and you’ve decided to sell hair products online, it’s okay to create a banner and logo that identify your site title as “Coiffurism” but the actual words you use to tag your site on the back end should list your primary services, location and a few best-selling products.

These are quick, simple changes you can use that will make a huge difference in your search engine optimization and that will increase online traffic to your website.

Put Your Business services on the homepage as “hyperlinks”

The homepage is the heart of your small business website. The search robot uses it to determine exactly what is the business all about. It is vital to include all the business details plus the location (cities or towns) and service areas, in a paragraph format, on the website homepage. Each of these services should be a hyperlink to either:

Service page – a comprehensive overview and listing of that particular service

Separate complete web page – pertains to the particular service that includes business goods and products being offered, and other useful relevant business information.

The “service” itself should be the “hyperlink” (i.e. carpet cleaning, car repair, tailoring). This will inform the search engine robot about the service offerings on the website and in effect, increase their visibility to the market when searched online.

These three must-haves on business websites can create a lucrative change when implemented properly. Business owners can expect positive rewards from these changes and benefit from the increased online visibility as early as day one.

There are millions of businesses scrambling to get a great share in the online market. Your small business is in a daily experience battle for time and attention, the chance to be seen and heard. Having the proper marketing tools to strengthen your brand and essentially give you a loud voice in crowded arena is essential for online marketing success.

Keywords

Search Engine Optimization is the best way to improve the visibility of your website to enable search engines to find you online and direct traffic to you. Making good use of the right keywords and phrases is going to be at the heart of your online marketing campaign. When choosing keywords and phrases, think in terms of how people generally search the web. When your customers type in search criteria, it’s probably going to be specific enough to give them good search results. So while you may be tempted to reach more people by using “golf clubs” as your key phrase, if you have a brick and mortar location, you would likely benefit from a more specific search term. That’s because your customers will likely key in a location-specific search term like “golf clubs in Houston” to get the best results to suit their needs. If that’s what they are searching, that is the key phrase under which you should be listed. The key to great keywords and phrases is to be specific. Think niche.eve

Fortify Your Stance

It’s smart to use meta tags, title tags, and alt tags, for images. If at all possible, use your keyword of phrase in your short, readable URL. Be direct, brief, and concise. Your keywords should be reflective of the content you have on your site. Relevance of website content is important to keep your URL in good standing. Update your site frequently and make use of interactive elements to improve your chances of showing up in search results.

Get Social

Use social media to your advantage. It is an effective tool in advertising and online marketing. Not only is the use of social media a great way to increase your company’s visibility or web presence, but it also assists in strengthening your brand name. It is an excellent platform for providing useful information that links back to your website.

When it comes to optimizing your site, it’s a good idea to just make use of the tools available in the active use of platforms at your disposal. Using keywords and phrases helps to bridge the gap between your brand and your content. Actively operating with this knowledge will help to improve your brand’s visibility.

Email marketing is an effective strategy for businesses of all sizes to communicate with current and prospective customers. Building a list is especially ideal for small businesses, because it’s inexpensive and relatively simple. There are a few ways to build an email list–some methods are more ethical than others. Some businesses choose to buy email lists; many recipients may view this type of message as spam. Building a list from scratch is ultimately more effective because you’re contacting people who have expressly shown interest in your company.

Collect email addresses from customers. If you have a store or booth, you can place a sign-up sheet near your checkout for customers to write down their name and email address. If you have an online shop, you can include an option during the checkout process for customers to opt in to your mailing list. Let people know that signing up for your mailing list gives them access to updates, sales and exclusive deals.

Offer a free product or discount. This is especially effective online. For example, offer a download an ebook or white paper relevant to your business. Offer a free sample or discount coupon when they sign up for your list. Keep in mind that some consumers may sign up for your list in order to receive the product and then unsubscribe right away, so be sure you’re offering a product you can afford to give away! Digital products are an affordable option for cases like these. If you do decide to offer a free sample, consider making it a limited-time offer. Coupons and discounts can work in a similar way – encourage people to sign up by offering a discount via email when they opt in.

Make it easy for visitors to sign up for your list. Place a form or signup link in a prominent place on your website. Keep signup simple–a name and email address is really all you need.

Encourage your subscribers to forward your emails to people they know who would also benefit from signing up for your list.

Keep your subscribers’ information private. Reassure visitors that you won’t sell or share their email address or any other information when they sign up for your list. Many are hesitant to give out their email address because they don’t want to receive spam messages – and for good reason!

Make sure each email or newsletter you send tells who you are and how to contact your business. What you don’t want to do is get people all riled up about what you have to offer, yet leave them with no clue how to get it.

The upcoming Big Baller System is supposed to help you build your list super fast – check out a big baller system review to see if it’s right for your business.

Whether you are a company focused upon the environment and the health of the planet and its inhabitants, or if you are a business focused on something entirely different, eco-friendly corporate gifts are perfect ways of showing your appreciation to those around you and keep business relations healthy. Plus, these eco-friendly corporate gifts are perfect at any time of the year, not just during the holiday season.

Here are a few suggestions for green corporate gifts – and there are plenty more where these came from.

Recycled Tire iPad Sleeves – Manypeople love to carry their iPads to work with them, and what better way to do so than with an iPad sleeve made from recycled tires and recycled plastic from water bottles? These sleeves are just as effective and durable as any other, but they are helping keep waste out of landfills. Plus, they are vegan and cruelty-free.

Pocket Purifier – Office environments can become home to germs, especially keyboards and telephones. Help your employees or clients keep their offices germ-free with this easy-to-use purifying system that uses ultraviolet light that actually kills 99.9% of germs, eliminating the need for costly and smelly hand purifiers and antibacterial sprays and wipes.

Getting the right idea or topic is considered an important aspect in creating a good blog site but developing the appropriate content plan is the key to getting your project just a little closer to perfection. Your ultimate target is “value added” – the effects of which your blog could create by having a well constructed, thought out content strategy. Instead of focusing on trends and stream of consciousness type of writing start building your content ideas at least a month in advance. A solid content plan is like creating a detailed road map that can give your blog a great sense of perspective as you develop your ideas over time.

So, what exactly is a content plan? A content plan is just that – a plan for what you plan to present in your blog. It can be as simple as a list of ideas tacked on the wall in front of your computer, or if you’re working with multiple content providers, a shared spreadsheet sorted by tag / category that everyone gets to see and to which everyone must adhere. Include everything – ideas, titles, contributors, interviewees, sources, blog ideas, submission dates for editing, actual date the content posted to the site, projected timeline of ideas and themes, links used, books and products referenced, media utilized (videos, images, mp3s, etc.). But it must be relevant and it must be essential.

When you’re planning your content, think about:

What? – What does your audience want and need to know? Develop a plan that is most suitable for your niche and stick to it.

Organization – Staying organized as maintaining order will undoubtedly have a positive effect on how you write your blog and helps to make it more interesting to your readers.

Being proactive – Don’t be caught off guard by updates, trends, changes, holidays and events that can easily be planned. Being proactive can also help you to create high-value, quality content around upcoming events.

Hiring help – With a specific content plan in place, you can get the services of a project manager who can supervise your site and follow your map as directed. It can simply make your life easier.

Consistency –With your written content plan, it will help you to stay on schedule and submit copy in a timely manner.

Idea sharing – Good people have great ideas. Talk to others to get ideas about your site. The exchange of ideas is a valuable experience in creating thinking.

One measure in having a good and effective blog is in how you conceptualize and plan your blog content. Your blog is designed to connect you to your audience. And often connecting requires forethought. Use these helpful tools to develop a plan that will establish your credibility and grow your audience.

Choosing a website host is an important decision. You want a host that is affordable. However, you also want a website host that offers the features and functions you need. Here’s a quick checklist to look over as you select a provider.

Is their control panel user friendly? Many hosts offer free demonstrations or tours. Take advantage of these to make sure it’s a control panel that makes sense and is easy to use.

Building your own site or looking for a website builder too? Some website hosts offer site building tools. These can be useful if you’re not interested in getting into the technological side of building a website. However, if you are building your own website using any number of software programs or languages, make sure the host has FTP transfer. This is the system you’ll use to upload your web pages to your host’s server.

Can you upload your files easily? Some website hosts are only compatible with certain file types. Make sure your website builder of choice works with your host before you pay for their services. Are they big enough for your needs? Look for data space, bandwidth and file size limitations. You don’t need to go crazy however a host does need to accommodate your current needs and give you some room to grow.

Can you count on server reliablity? Downtime should be exceptionally rare and you should be forewarned when the servers are going to be down. Ideally, your host’s server should be up and running 99% of the time.

Can you count on security? If you’re doing business online then security is a must. Even if you’re not doing business online, you’ll want to do everything you can to protect your website from hackers. A secure host is essential.

Are there extra features and functions? What do you need your website to have? Do you need a shopping cart, email or autoresponders? Do you need to be able to sell advertising? Do you want analytic and reporting functions to track traffic and website visitor behavior? Make sure your website host has all the features and functions you need before you sign up and transfer your domain.

Check out user reviews. This is the last thing to look at once you’ve narrowed down your choices and before you compare prices. Make sure the company has a solid reputation in the industry. There are a lot of resellers out there, you also want to make sure you’re dealing with an acutal hosting company and not a reseller – you’ll get a better price and far better customer support.

Finally, it’s time to compare price. If a website host meets all of the above criteria and fits your budget, you’ve found a good company. There are many wonderful website hosts out there. Spend a bit of time researching based on your needs and you can’t go wrong.

Starting a business is romantic. It’s one of those things you aspire to do – start a business. But the term is misleading. You don’t start a business in the same way you start a car, by turning the key in the ignition (hopefully only once) and letting the car do what it does to keep running. Your business will be a living entity – evolving, growing and consistently requiring your attention. So while we may say we’re starting a business, the reality is that successful businesses require management. From this point forward, think in terms of managing your business.

Entrepreneurs tend to be idea people. If you’re the type of person who can identify potentially profitable niches or recognize underserved markets, be glad. For your course may be an adventurous one. For you, the challenge lies not in dreaming up ideas, but rather in committing yourself to benefit from the Gift of Having Great Ideas by developing one vision at a time. The way to accomplish any vision is to plan, prepare then execute.

Plan

Get in the habit of writing things down. Write your plans down and make them plain. Not all businesses need a 30-page business plan, detailed to the nth degree with appendices and fancy Excel macro work. Your business may, it may not. If you are going to be securing outside funding, you will need to brush up on your Excel. If your business is you and your teenage daughter running a weekend babysitting service, you can probably get away with a two-page outline and successfully become a couple of weekend business owners. If that is the case, feel free to do it. Still, one thing your business plan will need for sure is to make the transition from your beautiful mind (not in the Russell Crowe way) to your handy dandy notebook.

Prepare

There are three major areas to address at the onset of developing your vision – capital, industry and market.

Capital – Think of it this way. Capital for the sake of capital is not capital. Capital is a resource that is necessary for production. Your capital includes more than just money. It’s also your experience, your ability, your advisors, your human resources. Take an accurate inventory of your capital in those five categories. What do you truly have to work with?

Industry – Do your research. An extremely perceptive nature may steer you to a particular business, but you still need to make an educated decision on your field of interest based on solid research. This means watching other companies in the same industry; checking with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in your area; connecting with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), the U.S. Census Bureau, and other local industry associations. Go online and find trade magazines for your industry. Often times you can subscribe to trades for free and get access to a wealth of great information.

Market - The two Cs are the key here – customers and competitors. Who wants your goods? How much are they willing to pay for them? What other local companies can offer a comparable product? Will you have a physical location or is your business primarily of a virtual nature? Understand what your competitors are doing. Then do it better.

Execute

Finally, the most important advice you will ever get, particularly for those of us who tend to over-think, over-notate, over-process everything. Just do it. The Nike people had that one right.

Disaster strikes. You come in one morning and your back door’s been jimmied open. You’re stunned and a little shaken. You walk inside slowly, but are soon relieved when you discover the intruder has already gone… with several computer monitors, one tower, the lobby TV… and what else?

Been there? It sucks. Not only are you angry that you have been ripped off, but you are likely offended that the thief chose your business. You will file that all-important police report and offer a list of the things you know are missing. The thing with burglary, however, is sometimes you don’t know something is missing until you need it and that could be days or weeks later.

Very often business owners do a pretty good job at tracking inventory assets. Your computer, however, is an asset as well and it also needs to be tracked. Tracking assets is not at all complex. It can be as simple as making a list of the things you own with serial numbers, dates of purchase and amount of purchase. You can easily snap a few quick photos with a camera phone. Simple but important.

Get Going

Quickbooks allows you to record the serial numbers, purchase dates and notes about the items you own and their physical location within your business. There are some great downloadable Excel, Access and Word templates for both home inventories and business asset inventories available online. If you are going to do it manually, there are a few things you want to make sure you track.

Date and source of purchase – You may even want to make a copy of the store receipt to keep in a separate Asset file. At the very least, you want to indicate the file in which the original receipt is located for easy access.

Product’s model and serial numbers

List any accessories and peripheral that came with the item purchased

Take pictures of each item to keep in your inventory file

Organize your list by rooms so that you can perform at-a-glance checks of your assets

Thieves break in. Natural disasters happen. If you haven’t already created a master list of the things you (and your business) own, get it done. It is far better to have that list on-hand in the event you ever need it than to be scrambling around with the police and your insurance company trying to figure out what’s missing.

Who among us has lived a life that has been completely stress-free? Stressors are so much a part of everyday life that very often we don’t even think of them as stressors anymore. You can move from one community to another and watch your stress level increase or decrease immediately. You can go from a low-profile job to a management position and the added responsibilities will inevitably include additional stress. For many of us, stress is here to stay, so let’s talk about ways to cope with stress.

There are a number of extremely effective drug-free methods for managing stress. The first suggestion is always to do what you can to identify where your stress originates and limit your participation in stressful activities. We recognize that life can carry with it seasons of ease and seasons of stress. If you happen to be in a stressful situation from which you are unable to remove yourself, there are several exercises you can try to manage the stress.

Purge your thoughts. Communicate your thoughts. But instead of focusing your attention on the problem, take a pen and a pad and write out the solution to remedy your stressful situation. So often, we are told to write out our feelings as a way to purge. In so doing, we don’t give our minds permission to imagine anything beyond the stressful situation. When you write or when you blog, state the problem succinctly in a sentence or two. Then spend the next five minutes writing out the very best case scenario for your problem. It’s both productive and cathartic.

Breathe on purpose. This may sound cliché, but deep breathing really does help to manage stress. Focusing your attention on an involuntary function like breathing redirects your thoughts and energy. Not only that, but repeatedly taking slowly, deliberate breaths is soothing.

Use up that nervous energy. After a deer has been frightened and the threat removed, a deer will spend the next few minutes shivering to expend the excess energy that built in the blood stream when its fight or flight reflex was engaged. In the same way, when you deal with stressful situations, you need something to “calm your nerves.” Instead of reaching for a cigarette or a burger, expend the extra energy by going for a walk. Light exercise is a great drug-free method for managing stress. You don’t need to speed walk necessarily. Sometimes, a walk down to the end of the block and back is sufficient to expend nervous energy and help you to reestablish both physical and emotional balance.

Aromatherapy. It is no secret that certain scents help the body to relax. Find your favorite scent – a scented candle or your spouse’s body spray or a favorite fruit (orange peel is great for this) and just inhale deeply. Take a few minutes to mentally disengage. It only has to be a few minutes.

Eat right. There is something to be said for eating to cope with stress. Your body needs the nutrition to re-establish physiological balance, but often we run to high fat, high sugar treats, or so-called comfort foods, to help us through the tough moments. Instead of reaching for sugar, fat and carbs, opt instead for protein, calcium and iron. Why? The amino acid in protein helps to increase your dopamine levels. Iron helps your body to battle fatigue. Stress depletes your calcium, so you should replenish calcium because it is necessary for neurological health. So what are we talking here? Instead of a slice of cake, you would fare better with a grilled chicken and cheese on iron-enriched wheat bread.

Stress is a part of life. We all need to find the best ways to spend the least amount of our time in stressful situations. When we do get into stressful situations, however, there are ways to effectively manage stress without having to self-medicate.

To your health.
